One Hastings
Designed by MHNDU for Lindos Group One Hastings is a boutique apartment block of three residences on a prominent corner location at Bondi Beach, Sydney. Surrounded by post-war, red-brick, art deco apartment blocks, the renovation of the pre-existing building has taken the heritage of its architectural context into careful consideration. Forming an important part of the fabric of the street and suburb’s historic character, the aesthetic integrity of the former red-brick, art deco building has been conserved, its internal scheme updated to offer modernised living spaces.
Prior to its renovation, One Hastings contained two apartments that were very dark and lacked residential amenity. Keeping the site envelope, the building now comprises three apartments, garage parking, and outdoor terraces which flow from the living areas. Significantly, an abundance of natural light filters into each dwelling through a series of aluminium framed openings which maximise the building’s northern aspect. Built using a mixture of new and original brick by K2 Construction, PGH’s dry pressed architectural brick was utilised alongside the heritage bricks, the balance of the brickwork critical in retaining the essence of the building’s original streetscape presence.
One Hastings is, in many respects, a labour of love. Its sensitive reconfiguration proves that with enough dedication and design craftsmanship, distinct heritage red-brick, inter-war apartments can be preserved and updated to accommodate modern lifestyle and living requirements.
