Located on a spectacular site overlooking iconic Bondi beach, this stunning location offered much inspiration. With this design we aimed to lyrically connect to the natural cliff-side surroundings, the sandstone, and the ocean beyond. A sweeping copper roof evokes various images ranging from surf boat hulls to breaching humpback whales. A large curvilinear curtain wall to the south allows us to sense the rolling of large ocean swells. Responding to coastal textures and forms through raw materials such as copper, off-form concrete, and sawn out rock face, formwork “fossils” were also integrated into the columns and facade to give a sense of time. Natural light fills the volume over three levels as it sits delicately on the water’s edge, maximizing panoramic views with floor to ceiling glass overlooking the drama of Bondi Beach.
